Kate Orara:
Welcome back to another episode of the Rising Stars podcast, where we dive into the latest strategies and insights for staying ahead in the ever-evolving retail market. Hopefully, you all know me by now, but if not, I’m your host, Kate Orara. In this episode, we’re going to tackle a critical topic that affects every business in the retail space: cybersecurity.

As technology continues to advance and more retailers rely on digital tools to operate (which they should!), the risk of cyber threats is higher than ever. Whether you’re a reseller advising a client or a retailer looking to protect your business, understanding what to invest in for cybersecurity can be a game-changer. Today, we’re going to cover the top—well, my top—cybersecurity investments that resellers should be recommending to their retail clients. My goal for this episode is to provide you with the details you need to bring to your end users so you can build and maintain trust with them.

First on the list is endpoint protection. In a retail environment, there are numerous points of entry that cybercriminals can exploit—think point-of-sale systems, tablets, kiosks, and even customer-facing devices. By investing in advanced endpoint protection solutions, retailers can monitor in real-time, detect threats, and automatically intervene before issues escalate. Resellers should emphasize to their clients the importance of having robust protection at every endpoint to create a secure digital perimeter.

Next up is multi-factor authentication, or MFA for short. You’ve probably heard this term quite a bit, and for good reason. MFA adds an additional layer of security by requiring more than just a password to access sensitive systems. Encourage your clients to adopt MFA for any platform that handles sensitive customer or payment information, such as e-commerce sites and CRM systems. This simple step can drastically reduce the risk of unauthorized access.

Now, let’s talk about data encryption. Data is often most vulnerable when it’s being transmitted or stored. By using comprehensive encryption strategies, retailers can ensure that sensitive information like customer data and payment details is secure. Resellers should advise their clients to implement full-disk encryption for devices, end-to-end encryption for data in transit, and strong encryption protocols for data at rest.

Moving on to network security tools. A secure network is the backbone of any retail operation, protecting against threats like malware, ransomware, and DDoS attacks. Firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, and secure Wi-Fi with network segmentation are all essential investments. Advise your clients to separate their customer and operational networks to minimize the impact of potential breaches.

Regular security audits and vulnerability assessments are another key area for investment. By routinely checking their systems, retailers can identify and address vulnerabilities before they are exploited. Recommend quarterly or semi-annual audits, vulnerability scans, and penetration tests to keep their cybersecurity measures up-to-date and effective.

Now, let’s not forget about the human element: employee training on cybersecurity awareness is huge—bigger than you think. Many breaches occur due to human error, whether it’s falling for a phishing scam or mishandling sensitive data. Regular training can make employees aware of potential threats and best practices. Encourage your clients to conduct ongoing training sessions and simulated phishing attacks to keep cybersecurity top of mind for their teams.

Okay, so here’s a little side note—a funny story I’m going to share with you all. The IT team at Star is constantly testing us to make sure we understand the differences between spam and phishing. One time, they got me good. Employees local to the Star New Jersey headquarters can bring their dogs to the office, as long as they’re well-trained. I’m a dog person—I love dogs! I have a dog myself, her name’s Luna, and she’s awesome. Well, an email went out from what looked to be the HR department, saying that a dog was loose outside the office. The email asked if we could look at the attached image and let them know who it belonged to. Well, I wanted to see the dog, so yes—yours truly, me, opened the attachment. I ended up having to take an entire course (begrudgingly) on how to identify phishing emails.

While it might seem like common sense to some, it’s not as obvious to everyone. Educating others on slowing down and thinking twice can actually prevent a breach, so education is key. Side note to the side note—I’m now very wary of opening anything with an attachment, which isn’t exactly a bad thing!

Getting back to the main point: what happens if there is a breach? That’s where incident response and recovery planning come in. Even with the best defenses, breaches can happen. Having a plan helps minimize damage and speeds up recovery. Resellers should advocate for a comprehensive incident response plan that includes clear steps for dealing with breaches and robust disaster recovery solutions to ensure business continuity.

Now, let’s talk about payments. Secure payment solutions are a must, since payment data is a prime target for attackers. Investing in secure, PCI DSS-compliant payment processing solutions is crucial. Recommend options like tokenization and EMV technology to your clients to enhance the security of their transactions.

Next on my list is ensuring compliance with data protection regulations. Depending on where a retailer operates, they may need to adhere to regulations like GDPR, CCPA, or PCI DSS. Non-compliance can lead to hefty fines and loss of customer trust. Advise your clients to use compliance management solutions that automate monitoring and reporting to stay on top of these requirements.

Finally, consider recommending cyber insurance. This is often overlooked but can be a lifesaver in the event of a cyber incident. Cyber insurance can help mitigate the financial losses from data breaches, business interruptions, and the costs associated with remediation and notification. Encourage your clients to explore policies that cover a wide range of potential cyber threats.

So, there you have it—my top recommendations for cybersecurity investments in the retail space. By advising your clients on these key areas, you can help them build a strong defense against cyber threats and protect their businesses and customers.
